Vitamins: To Take Or Not To Take " It's A Issue You May Want To Get Advice On

By Millard K. Whittaker

It's an age old question when we find ourselves wondering if we should be taking vitamins to fortify our health. Did you know that our bodies do not have the ability to manufacture vitamins from scratch?

It's been slightly more a hundred years since the finding of vitamins. They were referred to as micro nutrients, meaning we don't need large quantities of them. Yet, the small amounts that we do need are essential for maintaining healthy bodies. So, if our bodies can't create them from scratch, how do we get them and how much do we need?

We're supposed to be receiving our daily input of vitamins from the food we eat. In years past that was probably a true statement but in more recent times our food choices have been called into question because so many of us seem to be ignoring healthy food choices in favor of quickness and convenience. So, the next time you find yourself at a fast food restaurant to purchase the family dinner think about the truth of that thought.

We really do know what we're supposed to be eating but not very many of us actually follow through on what we know we're supposed to do. No big surprise there. And, suppose we do attempt to eat healthy meals; there's the issue of not really knowing if we're getting the vitamins we require in the quantities we need when our choices comes from highly refined, chemically treated foods that may not even have enough vitamins left in them to make a difference.

Then there are special cases of people who may be taking vitamins faithfully but because of certain conditions that are unique to their lifestyles, may not be getting full benefit of the vitamins they are taking. These groups contain people like pregnant women, the elderly, smokers and post-menopausal women to identify just a few but it's a lengthy list.

Vitamins play an important role in the body's biological processes like growth and fighting infection as well as act as a force in the body's chemistry to help support the processing of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. They're also used to foster growth, strengthen resistance to infection and ensure proper metabolism to name just a few. One thing you can't count on vitamins for is a boost in energy. Vitamins have no calories and calories are what we use for the energy we need.

What can occur if you don't have enough vitamins? Well that might just suggest a vitamin deficiency and that can take many forms depending on what vitamin is lacking. A brief mention covers hair and nail afflictions, vision ailments and some skin diseases. That doesn't even include some of the really serious afflictions that have been attributed to vitamin deficiency.

Finally, it's vital to know that vitamin supplements are classified according to how they're stored in the body; they're either water soluble or fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins do not stay in the body for any serious length of time. Any amount of water soluble vitamins that is not used by the body after ingestion is found in the urine shortly after. These are easily handled by the body and do not threaten to become toxic because they are not stored anywhere in the body. On the other hand, fat soluble vitamins need to be handled more knowledgeably because they are stored in the body for long periods of time. With the repeated addition of more of this type of vitamin, there's a chance of reaching toxic levels which could cause great harm. It's important to realize the differences and to act accordingly by reading and carefully adhering to label directions. If you plan to deviate from the recommendations of the manufacturer, then it's a good idea to do so only under the advice of a trained professional.
